With a background of family members working as Emergency Management directors and law enforcement, instructor Jeanette Smith grew up in an emergency services and search and rescue environment.  She began working dogs in 1971, and included SAR dogs in her work in 1979. Experiences have included many local searches both in Washington State and Ohio, her current state of residence; as well as national callouts such as the Riverside quake of 1994 and the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995 with the WA TF-1 FEMA task force, as well as stand-by callouts for New York City after 9/11 and for the New Orleans disaster in 2005.

Ms. Smith has been a guest speaker to search personnel and management at several gatherings of the National Association for Search and Rescue.  She has taught for Homeland Security groups, and also worked for the Nashville TN Mayor’s Office of Emergency Management.  She wrote and edited the SAR Dog ALERT newsletter for professional K-9 handlers for several years for NASAR, as well.

In addition to training dogs and handlers for Heartland K-9 Search and Rescue, she has trained dogs for Snohomish County Search and Rescue in Washington State, assisted with training for Northwest Disaster Search Dogs, been a trainer with the FEMA task force in WA. State, and visited many SAR dog units around the U.S. to help problem-solve, and get them started. She also taught at a wilderness conference in ELY, Minnesota; as well as assisting with cadaver and tracking classes for Specialty Search Associates from Washington State, in the early 1990s.

Ms. Smith is a full time dog trainer for both professional dogs in police and emergency work, as well as private clients with obedience and behavior modification needs through Heartland K-9 Services.
